What is shingles?

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it. It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox.

It’s estimated that around 1 in every 4 people will have at least one episode of shingles during their life

What are the symptoms of shingles?

Shingles begins with pain and an itchy blistering rash, similar to chickenpox. New blisters may appear for a week, turning yellow, flattening, and forming scabs. The pain, ranging from dull to sharp sensations, can persist after the rash vanishes. Full healing takes about 4 weeks, with lingering skin tenderness.
